World Boxing (WB), the international governing body for the sport, announced on July 12 that it has lifted participation restrictions on athletes from Belarus, a key ally of Russia in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The decision allows Belarusian boxers to compete under their national flag and anthem, representing their country in international events.

In contrast, restrictions on Russian athletes remain in place. Russian competitors will continue to participate as “individual neutral athletes” without national representation, flags, or anthems. This stance aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) recent recommendation to revoke its earlier advisory on restricting Belarusian athletes from international competitions. WB stated that its move follows the IOC’s updated guidance.

The IOC’s policy shift this month effectively ended a long-standing ban on Belarusian participants, though several international sports federations—such as athletics and tennis—have chosen to maintain their own restrictions on both Russian and Belarusian athletes. WB’s decision marks a notable step in boxing’s approach to the geopolitical tensions affecting international sports.
