Joining Mainz 05 in January 2024 was arguably the best career move for Nadiem Amiri. However, the 29-year-old midfielder could make his final appearance for the club in this weekend’s away match against Heidenheim, despite his contract running until summer 2027. Signs are mounting that he is seeking a transfer.
After the 3-1 defeat to Union Berlin on Sunday evening, Amiri sidestepped questions about his future during an interview with DAZN. Responses such as “I don’t know” and “I don’t understand” left Mainz fans uncertain whether they will lose another fan favorite for the second consecutive year, following Jonathan Burkardt’s potential departure. Amiri has been instrumental in the team’s positive development over the past two seasons.
Sporting director Niko Bungert attempted to calm the situation: “We’re relatively relaxed about it. We haven’t heard anything from Nadiem or any club suggesting a change is imminent. Speculation about Nadiem arises every transfer window, but he’s still here and happy.”
Since arriving at Mainz, Amiri’s market value has soared from €4 million to a peak of €20 million (currently €17 million). The next few weeks are crucial for him as he aims to secure a spot in Germany’s World Cup squad after missing the last two international camps in November and March due to injury. Additionally, with his 30th birthday just five months away, this could be his final chance at a major transfer and a lucrative contract.
Rumors strongly link the Turkish champions Galatasaray with Amiri. Cimbom will compete in the Champions League again next season, while Mainz—despite reaching the Conference League quarterfinals—will miss out on European football for the 2026/27 campaign.
