Russian tennis players Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider have secured a spot in the women’s doubles semifinals at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid.
In the quarterfinals, the Russian duo comfortably defeated the Australian-Dutch pair of Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs with a score of 6:3, 6:3. The match lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes.
In the semifinals, Andreeva and Shnaider will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Russian Vera Zvonareva.
The match took place on April 29, which marked Andreeva’s 19th birthday.
Shnaider, 22, is ranked 19th in singles, while Andreeva holds the eighth spot. The pair played together last season, winning tournaments in Brisbane and Miami (a WTA 1000 event), reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, qualifying for the WTA Finals, and earning a nomination for WTA Doubles Team of the Year.
The tournament’s prize fund exceeds $8.23 million. Last year, the Madrid title was won by Russian Anna Kalinskaya and Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.
