Deion Sanders has never forgotten where he came from. Growing up in Fort Myers, Florida, he watched his mother, Connie Knight, work tirelessly to make ends meet. He vowed to change her life one day—and he did, shortly after being selected fifth overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1989 NFL Draft. Now, on Mother’s Day, the Colorado head coach made sure the world knew exactly where his heart remains.

“Ain’t No mama like my mama! Happy Blessed Peaceful Mothers Day Ma,” Sanders wrote on Instagram, tagging Connie Knight, his sister Tracy Knight, his oldest daughter Deiondra, and “all the mothers out there that’s taking care of their business & being a mother 1st & foremost.”

The post included photos of Connie from last year’s Nike Air Max DT’96 “Love Letter to Connie” campaign, a deeply emotional moment when Sanders read a letter directly to his mother.

“You are a role model of consistency,” he told her at the time. “Thank you, Mom, for just being you. Ain’t no Mama like you. I love you, Mom.”

Coming from a broken home—his parents divorced when he was two, and both his biological father and stepfather battled addiction—Sanders credits his mother with instilling the drive that made him a two-sport legend. She worked grueling hospital shifts, often missing his high school games because she was too busy keeping the family afloat.

“I got my work ethic from my mother,” Sanders once said. “She worked two jobs so the ends could see one another, although they never met. She never saw me play ball in high school.”

That relentless hunger explains why Sanders refused to limit himself to one sport or one paycheck. He became the only athlete to play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series, chasing not headlines, but the security his mother never had.

Now as the head coach at Colorado, he often shares those lessons with his players, particularly those from single-parent homes. He sees himself and his mother in them. But even a bond this strong comes with moments of playful tension.

Just recently, on his son Deion Sanders Jr.’s “Well Off Media” show, Sanders casually revealed that he sold his mother’s house without giving her a full heads-up. Connie was not amused.

“I started to rent your room out, too,” Sanders joked in the video. “I started to give your room away because you weren’t coming on time.”

Connie shot back: “No, you weren’t going to get my room away.”

The exchange highlights a relationship built on love, humor, and the occasional burst of family drama—even when one half of the duo is one of the most famous coaches in college football.
